The Gardens of Italy
The Italian Renaissance changed the philosophy of garden design and influenced gardens throughout Europe for centuries. During this tour, we will visit gardens demonstrating the principle ideals of the Renaissance of balance, order and harmony, influenced by the Greeks and Romans and then we will stroll through gardens that are organized instead with a seemingly disregard for the Renaissance design principles. More currently designed gardens include Ninfa, an incredible garden developed in the ruins of a medieval town and the garden of La Mortella on the island of Ischia filled with exotic tropical and subtropical species and views of the Mediterranean sea. In addition to the many gardens visited, we will enjoy tasty traditional meals, stroll through villages, explore castles and markets and have ample time for independent discovery.
Gardens included in this tour: The Villa d'Este, Hadrian's Villa, The Garden of Ninfa, La Mortella, La Foce Estate, the Sacro Bosco, the Boboli gardens, Villa Castello, the Gamberaia Estate and others.
Thanks so much for planning and executing such a wonderful trip...I feel so fortunate to have experienced Italy with you...It truly was a trip of a lifetime. —Ann P, Worthington, OH
