Rome, Naples, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast
Rome is a city of emperors, popes and Baroque art all integrated into a modern and vibrant city. We will explore Rome’s past while discovering it’s present, as we visit historic sites and stroll through neighborhoods that today’s Romans call home. From Rome we take the train to Naples. Sitting in the shadow of Mt Vesuvius, this city is as dense with history and art as it is with humanity. The renowned Archeological Museum, the lively open-air fish market, churches, iconic Naples' pizza and a seaside promenade will all be a part of this very Italian experience. We will depart this exciting but chaotic city via a scenic ferry ride to Sorrento, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. Perched high above the south side of the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is resplendent with lemon and olive groves, old town streets brimful of shops, bars and places to enjoy the wonderful seafood from the Mediterranean. This will be our base while we explore the spectacular Amalfi coast, including the villages of Positano, Ravello and Amalfi, then Herculaneum and Pompeii. Pompeii, once a busy port with 20,000 residents, was covered in 30 feet of hot volcanic ash in 79 AD. Preserved for all time, these Roman cities have become sites much studied by archeologists and intrepid tourists. During the extent of this tour, you will have ample free time for investigating on your own in addition to the informative and fun excursions planned by your guide.
